Founded in 2011, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation represents one of the world’s most iconic leaders, and his life-long partner. The Foundation strives to ensure their uncompromised bravery is celebrated, communicated and curated for posterity.

The Foundation

Guided by the values of our Founders, our goal is to nurture a generation of courageous leaders – from all ages and walks of life – to have an impact in the world by embodying the values and example left to us by Archbishop Tutu.

We carry the Arch’s legacy as a global signpost for exceptional leadership, and profound moral courage. To tackle the challenges of our time effectively, we need both technical development solutions and a new wave of action driven by courage, capacity, and compassion – at a societal level. This latter work to reimagine the nature of our societies is the focus of the Tutu Legacy Foundation. We do this through three programmes.

Learning from Legacy

Through using the platform of the Truth to Power exhibition, we engage a wide range of audiences in learning about the story and impact of Archbishop Desmond and Mrs Leah Tutu.

We serve thousands of school learners to engage with values of leadership, principles of democracy, and the healing work needed by our society. We engage young children with the imaginative stories inspired by Tutu's own children's books. And we reach the broader public in programmes and efforts to tell and share stories of hope and courage in South Africa, and the world.
